Ariens gearbox swap

I don't have the snowblower model #'s handy, but I'm going to try to swap the older style cast iron gearbox into a snowblower with the newer aluminum(?) one. It looks like it'll work, but has anybody tried this before? Also, can 80W90 gear lube be used for the older cast iron unit? Thanks

Thumbs up

After spending the better part of Sunday working on this, I have discovered that the auger and gearbox assembly are just slightly different enough that swapping the older one into the newer housing wouldn't work. So I simply put the whole older blower unit onto the newer one. It works, but since the tires are bigger on the newer one, the rear is a little higher than the front. It'll buy me enough time to replace the rod on my even newer 10HP Ariens snowblower. These machines last forever!
