Tecumseh 12 hp OHV- starter spining ???

Have a creaftsman riding mower with a Tecumseh 143.286162
12 hp OHV engine.

Starter will spin but won't engage the flywheel. Starter is 36680-CCRotation

battery is good, stater is clean, connection clean.

Can a starter just go weak?

The starter may just need cleaning around the bendix drive area. Sometimes it just accumulates crud and dust under the drive gear and makes it stick.

One other thing that could cause it is if it is rotating backwards (battery connected backwards).

Then the threaded section of the armature drive end is dirty, rusty, or gummed up, etc...

Ordered a new starter 158.00 big ones. So, here I am looking at the old one. Have nothing to loose and rip it apart. I Clean the contacts and wire harness and magnets, notice a wire on negative side of the contacts loose - fix it - put it all together and BINGO the starter runs like a champ.

Ok, apparently the starter must have been turning really slow and didn't have the inertia force to spin the bendix upwards. Too late to cancel the order?
