Briggs and Stratton 303447 0447-01
Hi, folks. I'm new to the forum. I have a Briggs and Stratton 303447 0447-01 engine in my Cub lawn tractor. oil has begun to spew out of the tube going to the air filter shroud. it was sudden not gradual. i need help troubleshooting. thanks, Jim

Check to see if it has too much oil in it, if so smell the oil, if it smells like gas you have a carb problem and it is leaking gas into the crankcase. If so you will need to rebuild the carb or at least install a new needle and seat and change the oil to get rid of the bad stuff. Have a good one. Geo

JimD, welcome to the forum.
If my post didn't help, you need to post a reply so someone else will make a suggestion, also it moves your problem higher on the forum so it gets more attention. Have a good one. Geo

thanks for your interest in my project. Please let me start from the beginning.
the machine has 613 hrs.[list]
oil is began blowing out the oil breather and th front seal. I checked the breather and it appears to be normal. I don't have a compression guage so I pulled the heads expecting to find a blown head gasket...no blown head gasket. valves don't appear burnt. do I check for bad rings next or am I missing something? thanks,
jim

Bad rings could cause this issue, but since it started suddenly I would not suspect this, unless something was ingested by the engine.
There was no indication of the head gasket leaking into the push rod galley on either of the cylinders?

everything appears normal. no oil in the cylinders...no burnt valves...nothing abnormal. the oil breather also looks ok but can it be bad and cause this?

Well it's a possibility, but in all the years I have been doing this, I have only run across 1 bad oil breather. They are pretty simple and not much to go wrong on them.

I agree...breathers rarely give trouble. I'd expect the head gasket to be bad right where the cylinder part of the gasket is next to the push-rod chamber area. Usually the gasket is blackened a bit in this area...not just obviously blown like missing pieces, just breeched.

ok. well...if there is nothing very obvious then I may as well go ahead and change the rings while I have it apart. if it was only a leaky head gasket I wont know until I put it back together.
are there any tricks to changing the rings; and front and rear seal?
thanks

If it was rings, it would be a gradual problem, not sudden, unless a ring broke. Broken rings are a very rare occurrence and I'd almost bet the farm your rings aren't broken...but if you can't find any other reason....
If the engine oil is the correct viscosity, the engine is operating relatively level, the oil level is not too full, and the engine is not overspeeding, then that leaves the breather, an air leak into the crankcase, the head gasket, or the rings.

I took the unit to the machine shop. I need the crank turned and undersized connecting rods but none are available. a used motor is probably my only option. does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you ever get the mower going right? I have the same engine on the same mower that is doing the same thing. I have checked the compression and it is 100 psi both cyl. so i don't think it blown head gasket. i took the breather off and cleaned it. i checked vacuum and have none.
