Craftsman Color Conspiracy

Kind of a silly question here - given all the serious stuff being dicussed - but please offer any insight you may have.

Little background. I have a big 11 HP 30 inch cut Craftsman snow thrower. The thing is a moose - believe the DOM is 2004.

I also have a friend who is unbelievably jealous of me. The reason; he has the same machine but his is red and mine is either black or dark green (I'm color blind so I couldn't say). Anyway, he says it's the dark green model - and it is built to much higher standards.

I had never heard of such a theory until he brought it to my attention.

So the question; Does Craftsman/Sears sell similar lawn/garden equipment (tractors, mowers, snow throwers, etc.) that can vary in quality and be identified by the paint color?

Could very well be.
e.g., Atwood's here in midwest last year sold PoulanPro and Husqvarna rt tillers, identical in every respect except for brand and color, both owned by parent Husqvarna.

Also, Cub and Troybilt 50" Ztrs identical except for brand, color and engine, both owned by MTD.

In your case, it might be two different models from same vendor, or just two different vendors.
The 1st 3 digits of the model number identifies the supplying vendor.

They are most likely made by different companies for Sears. And the companies used the colors they had. If you look at the model number ( xxx.xxxxx) the first 3 numbers are the code for the manufacturer.
