Snow thrower not throwing

I have a 2 Stage 5 hp Murray that starts and runs well, seems powerful.
When I get into light snow- not even heavy wet snow, the snow leaving the discharge chute barely clears 1 width of the snow thrower.
I put a new belt on it, but the old belt was hard to read. I think have the right one, I doubt if it is slipping. I kept tightening the tension, until the belt was actually burning against the pulley that engaged it. Discharge was still poor. Could a different belt make a difference?

Are there any other adjustments? Is anything within the gear box that may cause this?

It is a 6 speed, and the top speed is about an easy walking pace. Maybe the engine is not putting out enough rpm to spin shaft?

I am assuming the main auger is spinning fast enough, but the shaft that spins the discharge chute also controls the main auger, and uses the same belt.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Please post the snowblower model number. What is the belt number & brand you put on?
