can't pull cord on chainsaw all the way out

I have a model 3500 poulan chainsaw and when I pull the staring cord it kicks back when it only a short way out..like the engine is fireing befor the piston reaches TDS. its really a violent kickback..I followed all the instructions for the starting the saw ..any suggestions..Thank you for your time

Take off the pull starter, remove the flywheel, and check the key for proper alignment on the crank. Those things have the little cheap flywheel key molded into the flywheel. It sounds like yours may have stripped the key and the timing is slightly advanced.

Might want to take the spark plug out and just make sure the engine isn't flooded, or have oil residue built up in the cylinder causing hydrolock or excessive compression.
