Yard Works (mtd) auger belt problem

i Have a yard works snowblower (model # 31ae993i515) 33" cut 13hp. I broke the auger drive belt 2 days ago, so i go get a replacment belt remove the 5 belt guide bolts, replace the belt all ok. now the belt is burning (only when the auger is engaged) to the point i see smoke come out of the belt acess cover, and the auger does disagage but still turn slowly. to me it seems that the ilder pulley that enages the belt does not pull back enough to release it, but that does not explaine the burning belt

please help

it's an original mtd belt part #954-0222 it has the same part# then the old belt but the old belt has a "a" at the end of the part number. I did not think it would make a difference

I have a stupid question, but I have seen this many times.
Did you make sure you got the belt in the lower pulley UNDER the brake? I have seen many people who did not know there was a brake and had the belt going OVER the brake. This would explain the smoking as the belt is riding on the brake.

i don't remeber seening a brake i took the whole thing apart . The only thing i seen was like a pulley cleaner that rides in the lower pulley groove but it's on the top of the lower pulley. the only thing on the bottom of the bottom pulley is the belt guide bolts
