Craftsman Snowblower model 247.88664 Auger spinning by itself

I have a craftsman snowblower model 247.88664. This past winter the auger belt snapped. Went to sears and picked up a replacement part.

After I replaced the belt the auger started spinning by itself. You are supposed to push the handle down for it to spin. I loosened the wire attached to the handle and I can use the snowblower fine. I would just like to know how to really fix this or have someone fix this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

They sold you the wrong belt. It is too short. The correct belt number is 754-0343 or 954-0343.

When you replaced the belt did you loosen or remove the belt fingers? They need to adjusted so they are up against the belt when it is loose. By the belts hitting these fingers it pushes the top of the belt up and off the pulley at the top. Without the fingers adjusted properly the belt hangs into the pulley and it will be enough to turn the augers.

Hmmm. It may be that they gave me the wrong part. It wouldn't surprise me. I need to look at the extra belt that i purchased to see if it matches.

As far as the belt fingers. I didn't adjust anything. I assumed that it needed no adjustment.

Is there any place online that explains step by step how to replace the belt and adjust everything?

You can download an owners manual at this Sears website:

Your snowblower was made by MTD. Go here:
PDF Manual Web Archive
You will need the serial number as well as the model number.

Got the manual. Thanks. Are all craftsman snow blowers made by MTD?

No. Sears sends specs of what they want for Outdoor power equipment to manufacturers every year and the lowest bid wins. And that is per piece of equipment. You could go into a Sears store and see 3 snowblowers and all 3 were made by different manufacters. But now Briggs & Stratton has muscled their way into Sears and B&S is now the exclusive maker of Sears snowblowers, lawnmowers, and lawn tractors.
