Snowblower auger

The cable connecting the auger to the on/off mechanism for the auger on the handle of my snowblower has broken. Someone solved the problem by clamping it permanently in the ON position. Is it OK to do this? I'm wondering if it will cause any damage to the engine etc if the auger should ever get stuck in use. Could someone please advise.
The blower if a SNOFLITE 5/22,
Model #318 530 500
Serial # 372587
Patent 1986
2-stage
Tecumseh engine

I would buy a new cable at least for safety reasons.
If the auger does get stuck, you will burn up the belt and possible damage the pulley from the heat.
Also, the engine probably pulls over hard as you are also turning the auger while you try to start it.
