tecumseh 8 hp 1990

the gears don't work 1st thru to 5th. took the bottom plate off and a round 5" (looks like a frisbee )was off, and the belt closer to the auger is loose. how do i tighten that belt and where does that disk go. Sorry i don't know much about motors or the terms, but can fix things. thanks joe

You haven't given anyone enough to go on. You need to get the model number and serial number off the machine. I assume you don't have the manual. Maybe you can find enough info online then.

I had one of those a while ago and was not able to find much literature, so here goes;

1) Auger belt is supposed to loose when not engaged

2) The round disk is it metal or does it have rubber around the edge?

Please do post model & serial numbers. Then we can figure out what exactly we are working with.

ok so let me explain better. Clearing snow and was in 3rd gear when it just stopped moving. You can move the wheels by hand forward and reverse.. I have it apart and when i change gears, you can see the gears moving left to right. Now the round piece that was sitting on the bottom plate that i took off is steel 5" in diameter and has a 1 1/2" hole in the center of it. There seems also to bea rubber on the outer edgr.

Here are the specs.
Serial # 10543
Model# 08826
Bore 3.062
Stroke 2.5
Timing 0.090
Plug 0.030

Hope this helps someone to help me fix it and thanks in advance
Now i am guessing, since my belts aren't broken, it has to do with this (flywheel) thing.

sounds like one of these..
1> your friction disc(rubber edged disc) is worn out
2> your drive actuator cable needs adjusting
3> your drive belt is stretched, crusty and slipping

I'm no pro but I'm gonna guess it's a combination of 1 and 2 and maybe you can just adjust the drive cable to compensate for the worn drive disc. Look for a nut and bolt somewhere that will shorten the drive cable enough so that the friction disc and drive plate make contact again. if the friction disc and drive plate can't make contact then you'll have to replace the friction disc.

oh sorry.. I should've read better. I just realized that you mentioned that the friction disc (round rubber edge piece of metal) was actually separated from the drive gear? That should attach to an axle that would hold it perpendicular to the smooth metal drive disc.

Can you post a photo of the snowblower and of the parts in question? That would help a lot.
