Bolts for mounting lawn mower blades

Is there a special hardness for lawn mower blade bolts? The bolts I'm using are 3/8" X 24.

A grade 5 bolt is fine, if the key shears the bolt can give. A grade 8 is overkill and dangerous, you don't want it to break and have the blade exit at high speed. You really don't.

All the manufacturers I am familiar with spec grade 5 or higher bolts for mounting mower blades, except mowers with blade brake clutches where a lower grade is acceptable. There is absolutely no problem or risk with using a higher grade (8) bolt for mounting the blade.
