Honda mower hard to pull backward
Model: Honda HRM215K2HX
Frame & Serial#: MZBB-6304407
Engine#:: 6732326
Purchased 4/7/95
It is difficult to pull our Honda Harmony backwards sometimes (after releasing the self-propelled bar). You can feel the wheels clicking as you pull the mower backwards with a lot of resistance. Other times, there is no resistance and it is a piece of cake to pull backwards. What could be causing this?
I am in the process of replacing the drive belt, but I don't think that has been the problem.
Thanks

Take off each rear wheel, remove the drive components, clean and lube and reassemble them. This should fix the problem.

Did you check the height adjustment on the wheel. It may have slipped down a notch, which would make the mower almost impossible to pull backwards while running. Probably not your issue, but worth checking nonetheless.

yes, don't lube the outside of the gear or the wheel ring gear teeth. it will just collect dirt and grit.

You'll need to take the drive gear off and clean/lube the ratchet parts that are under that gear. That is where the problem is.

I have reassembled everything and now when I back up the lawnmower, the right wheel locks up. Everything works fine going forward, but it is difficult to turn since the one tire will not freewheel as you turn. I'll take it off again, though, since I lubed the outside of the gear and I see your point about grit and dirt buildup.
