Spring Locations for Gilson 1580 tiller

Hi I have a montgomery ward/gilson tiller, model # I have is 1580I, serial 57x 172 38 for the tiller
and the engine briggs:

100202-0145-01

It was a project and they had everything taken apart on the gas tank/throttle/carb area. well i just purchased 3 new springs, but i cant find a diagram on where they go to. where what connects to what. the only diagrams I ever found were part diagrams but not where they connect. I have a throttle return spring, short govenor spring, and long governor spring. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks!

Hello foxyroxy,

I identified the spring locations by part numbers, # 690498 slides over top of this short link rod (rod inside the spring center) and hooks into the same holes as the rod.

Good Luck

thanks for the diagram. I think this carb is missing half its parts. I made a list from the parts diagram and im missing govenor rods, choke rod, and bell crank, plus one of those springs.. im sure it had it and its missing... unless its one that really didnt have certain parts but i doubt it.

im debating whether to get the missing parts or find a used carb with them all..

btw, do you know how to attach the throttle control spring/rod to the lever under the gas tank? id appreciate if you can help with that. thanks again

If you are speaking of the governor lever on the back of the engine, The rod just hooks into the hole in the end of this lever.

But, It must be installed before the carb/tank assembly is installed. As for # 692208 spring, Hook it into the hole mid center on this governor lever and let it hang down. Now hold the carb/tank assembly close enough to the back of the engine.

With needle nosed pliers grab the hanging spring and hook the end to the control pivot arm on the inside of the tank bracket, Now you can mount the carb/tank assembly.

The second pic above shows the end results.....

Good Luck

Oh, no this is a throttle control lever that attached to the handles of the actual tiller and connects to the other side (im guessing) of the lever that the #692208 attachs to, but on on the other side. its a long spring-like lever.. that i guess you push in or pull out to control throttle.. but it was unhooked and i didnt know if it hooked on a certain way. I hope that made some sense

OK Roxy,

I think this is what your looking for, That is the throttle control cable and is held in place with a cable clamp and screw as below;

Well, it says that cable goes to the choke, which is wierd.. this throttle cable connects to the handle bars in the center. Im guessing it connects down to the tank. i think its some throttle control link with a spring around it. I will do my best.. i ordered a couple more parts. but if that wont do the job then...i dunno *L*
