Old Honda Mower Won't Start

Hi -
My in-laws gave me their lawn mower this weekend (after mine died), since they haven't used it in probably at least 2-3 years. It is a Honda HR-214 and has been kept in a shed. I changed the spark plug, put in fresh gas and oil, but can't get it to start. Any ideas on what I should try next (before taking it to a pro)? The pull cord is also very slow to retract, and a few times I had to manually feed it back in.

If a mower has been sitting there that long or longer do you think I'll be able to get it going (iow is it worth the trouble)?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

The carburetor is likely gummed up with stale gas. Honda carbs are very simple but need to be squeaky clean to work properly. If everything else is good, that machine is well worth resurrecting. It is a great mower.

Did you gap the plug? I "fixed" my friends mower by just gaping the plug correctly.

Thanks CanuckRoy--
Is there a quick link to point me to that shows how to clean a carburetor? I'm definitely game to try this, I've just never done it. Thanks again for the input.
