Yamaha has a tachometer that has a pickup lead that simply wraps around the spark plug lead a few times. They are about $35 to $40 as I recall.

Here's a link, although not Yamaha, of the same thing. Tiny-Tach: Gasoline Tachometers

Is this on a lawn tractor, push mower, riding mower? Do you want a permament mount or just want to read the RPMs on different equipment?

When I got my D.V.O.M, I made sure it had a tach function in it. This way, one meter works for volts, amps, ohms, hertz, & even microfrad (if I ever need it for condensers,,) & a bunch of other stuff I'll probably never use..Quick & easy to use,,, Roger

thanks for the replys, i was thinking only of a diagnostic reason but maybe a permanent hook up if it was cheap enough.

it's for a riding mower but i wanted to use it for any mower, but didn't know where to attach a lead or wire,

You can get a TREYSIT Sirometer, made in Germany, Tecumseh Part #670156 which will handle from 800 to 50,000 rpm or 14 to 750 cycles for $10-$15. You just hold it on the engine and it will tell you the rpm. I have used one for a long time, it is accurate to within 100 rpm. I just checked Oscar Wilson Lawn Mower Parts Missouri they have it for $11.11. Have a good one. Geo

I just installed a SunDec tach/hourmeter on my new Poulan.
I love it. Works great. Easy installation. Price is right.
