Briggs and Stratton Engine 18.5HP push rod

I have an 18.5 Briggs and Stratton Husqvarna 42" cut mower YTH18542. The motor model is 31Q777.
The mower was running fine. I turned it off then about 5 min later went to start it. It would turn over fast but would not hit. I checked the fuel lines with all lines appearing to be fine. I then found that the lower push rod was broken. I purchased a new push rod and replaced it, but it still just turns over fast then starts making a grind rattle noise. It never hits. I noticed that the rocker arms are adjustable. Could that be the problem, or do I need to look at something else?
Thanks

While not always true, the push rod breaks due to another problem, generally. Such as a bent valve stem or a tight valve to guide issue due to carbon buildup, or because of no valve clearance. By all means you need to check for proper and free operation of both valves and then ensure they have correct clearances, .005". Be sure to clean the combustion chamber and install a new head gasket and rocker cover gasket.
