Craftsman Mower Problem..

I have a self propelled Craftman Lawnmower engine model#143966500 and the belt squeels and will not move. I took apart the drive unit and replaced the worn axle gear. Belt still
squeels and wont turn..thinking it may be whatever drives the belt.

The belt doesn't turn? Or the belt turns but the tranny pulley doesn't? Can you turn the pulley by hand? Is it hard to turn?

Do you have the model number of the mower? That would help more than the engine number does. The belt is driven by a pulley on the crankshaft just above the blade. And that pulley is most likely keyed to the shaft. The key may have broke. Hard to say without the mower model number.

Model#917376301..

Q.The belt doesn't turn?

A.No the belt doesn't turn and it's squeels (slips) on the pulley thats attached to the crankshaft.

Q.Can you turn the pulley by hand?

A.I was going to try but I couldn't get the belt off. I know that if you push down on the drive unit it gives the belt slack but it wasn't enough to get it off. Do you have to remove the unit to get the belt off? TIA!

Should be able to slip the belt off at the engine pulley instead of trying to get it off the tranny pulley.
