Replace mandrel assembly on a Sears Lawn Tractor 917.275180
Hi, I have a problem with my lawn tractor (Sears Model: 917.275180). I hit a rock and the blade sheared off the bottom (star) portion on the shaft that is part of the mandrel assembly.
I have a replacement bolt (part # 137645) but I can't get the toplock nut off the assembly.
Normally I would use the blade to take the nut off but can't as there is nothing to keep the blade in place. I've tried to hold the mandrel pulley in place but that hasn't worked.
Is there a way to lock the pully / mandrel shaft in place (a tool for this purpose) so that I can remove the thing.
Any advice on getting this thing off from the tractor would be appreciated. Thanks

You may have to take the mandrel off the deck. Not a really hard job....remove the deck and only 4 screws to remove the mandrel. Everything goes back on pretty easily.

I don't recommend trying to remove the mandrel or you may wind up having to replace the entire assembly. There are 3 bolts holding the mandrel on and they are very prone to breakage if you try to remove them. Sometimes you get lucky, but most times one or more breaks off in the aluminum mandrel housing.
A strap wrench will hold the pulley, or use an impact wrench to remove the nut. That's how I get them off.
