Craftsman Self Propelled Mower Problem..

Craftman Lawn Mower Model#917376301..

Was having problems with the belt squeeling and not turning. Disassembled the drive unit and put back together. The wheels move while turning the pulley. But when assembled it must be locking up because the belt still slips. Would a bad belt cause this? Also noticed the engagement lever that controls the clutch has some play in it. Is there a special way to assemble the drive unit? TIA.

Is the belt tight when you engage it? Sounds like the belt is too loose.
