Unhappy Craftsman Lawn 20 HP Tractor Problems

Hi
I have an Electric Start 48" Mower Automatic Lawn Tractor model no. 944.601002 that was given to me. The problem is at the back of the tractor their is a freewheel lever that is not disengaging the transmission. When I push the tractor forward or backwards it will not freewheel. I blocked it off the ground and now the right wheel turns freely clockwise and the left wheel turns freely counter clockwise. I am stumped I don't know what to do next. If anyone could help me, you will make my day.
Thanks
Tony

Please recheck your model number. This 1 does not come up.

Check the brake on the side of the tranny, it may be stuck.

Due to the differential, any time you turn one wheel, the other will turn in the opposite direction..Does it work if you run it under engine power??? Some of these can be hard to push without the engine running @ the best of times... Roger

The wheels should turn in different directions regardless of how the freewheel is engaged. Did you check the brake?
