Craftsman Lawn 20 HP Tractor Problems
Hi
I have an Electric Start 48" Mower Automatic Lawn Tractor model no. 944.601002 that was given to me. The problem is at the back of the tractor their is a freewheel lever that is not disengaging the transmission. When I push the tractor forward or backwards it will not freewheel. I blocked it off the ground and now the right wheel turns freely clockwise and the left wheel turns freely counter clockwise. I am stumped I don't know what to do next. If anyone could help me, you will make my day.
Thanks
Tony

hello.
the model number is correct 944.601002 the serial NO. is 052101A001204.I took the tire off and turned the rotor brake on the side of the trany with my fingers so its free .the tractor is off the ground and I tryed the free weel lever both ways but the same thing ,.the tractor is off the ground and in the free wheel slot .when i turn the one wheel to the right the other goes left.I can spin the tires freely ether way no problem but still the same .One to the left and one to the right.??.When i put the free weel lever back to the engaged spot the weels shouldn,t turn but they do and still in different directions.smile its got me.thanks TONY

Due to the differential, any time you turn one wheel, the other will turn in the opposite direction..Does it work if you run it under engine power??? Some of these can be hard to push without the engine running @ the best of times... Roger

The wheels should turn in different directions regardless of how the freewheel is engaged. Did you check the brake?
