Too much oil

I just got a Craftsman rider in with a B&S 16.5 Hp I/C OHV engine. He said that it started smoking and quit. When I started working on it, the oil pan and crankcase had double the normal oil level in it. I pulled the plug and there was oil dripping off of it. What I wanted to make sure is what I need to check. This is the worst one I've ever seen.

Make sure the oil doesn't smell like fuel, If it doe's plan on a carb clean and new float valve and fuel filter along with a oil change.

If there's no fuel smell chock it up that the customer over filled it, Change the oil and fill to proper level then blow the excess oil out of the cylinder. Replace the plug and test run, Since it was that far over full it will most likely smoke a little until the oil is burned out of the muffler.

Good Luck

I appreciate your comments 31YTech. I adjusted the oil level and cranked the engine with the plug removed to blow out most of the oil...then I replaced the plug and it started easily and seems to be O.K....the oil dosen't seem to have a gas smell.
