Craftsman Lawn Mower Pull Start Help

I've got a Craftsman Self Propelled FWD (Model 917.372800) and the pull cord (when pulled) will engage the engine one time and on the second pull it just "free wheels". When I move the mower fore and aft a little (just enough that for the front wheels to "catch) I can pull the rope one time again and the second pull goes back to free wheel.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Well, The drive system has nothing to do with the starter recoil assembly, I would suggest removing the starter recoil assembly and check the ratchet dog assembly. The dogs could be worn so there's not enough drag to engage them or the starter cup could have sand/clippings inside hampering dog engagement.

You can download a complete service manual here; http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf

Good Luck

Thank you. I printed off the manual and will tear into it.

That is a great Manual and it's helped me many times over the last few years. Let us know how you make out.
Cheers.
