Starter won't engage flywheel

I have a Briggs 18.5 HP Model# 42A707 Type# 1238-01 The starter won't engage the flywheel. The starter turns fast but doesn't jump up to the flywheel. I took the starter off and tried it on a battery and it still does the same thing. It turns up manually by hand easy. Sprayed it with wd 40 but it still won't turn up when you put power to it. It doesn't look stripped out on the shaft or the gear. Any idea's?

Run the bendix up the shaft drive about an inch, then apply power to the starter. Does the bendix go up the shaft or down the shaft?

If the starter spins fast and the gear moves freely on the worm gear, Did you by chance just install another/new battery ?

Some don't realize there are reversed post batteries, They drop them in the battery tray and hook the cables up as they were not paying attention to the +/- on the battery post.

The results is fast spinning starter that won't kick the gear up,
And in some cases a blown ignition coil from putting battery voltage to the ground side.
