stx38 death?

Got a STX38 black deck 12.5 Kohler John Deere..went to start it the other day,it backfired...now it will not start period!!..changed plug first..no help..then fuel filter..no help..Tried to poor a little gas in the carb to help it fire, and I noticed as I was pouring it in the carb,it was coming out the bottom front of the engine..Have I blown a gasket?..is this fatal?...and I'm getting spark at the plug..but after trying to start a few times, the plug barely has a smell of fuel..and done the ole thumb compression test..and seemed like it had good
compression...Any thoughts?

Well,

If fuel poured out as you poured it in, I'd take a closer look at the head gasket. It's not fatal but only needs replacement, And just for giggles I'd check the flywheel key as well. A sheared key could have caused the back-fire which caused the gasket to blow.

Good Luck
