Kohler 15 hp Command - Carb Leaking

I have a 10 year old Scotts branded mower with a Kohler 15 hp Command engine. I have noticed the gas tank loses gas while the mower is sitting and discovered the carb is leaking -- gas drips off the bottom of the bowl of the carb after it has set a while.

I don't think the fuel line is leaking at the connection to the carb.

I removed the air cleaner element and noticed the curved air inlet part of the carb was full of fuel. If I start the mower this fuel is apparently drawn into the carb and a lot of white smoke comes out the exhaust. Once started, the mower works fine and the carb doesn't leak -- I assume any leaking fuel is being sucked into the combustion chamber while the engine is running.

Any idea what the problem is? Failed gasket, bad internal valve, etc.?

John

The needle valve in the carb is leaking. Replace the needle, clean the seat with a q-tip, and do not run the engine until you change the oil. The oil is most likely thinned down with gas (not a good lubricant).
