Lawn tractor starter problem

Hi all

17.5 hp tecumseh on a MTD of sorts, for a while its been clicking when starting, i would wrestle with it (repeat the key turning procedure while jostling the machine and swearing) and it would eventually start.

now it wont start. clicks. sometimes i can hear something engaging inside the starter and turning - but not quite catching or making contact. and occasionally a bit more but never enough to get the motor running.

where should i start trying to deal with this? Battery? solenoid or starter?

any help appreciated, thanks

could be solenoid but

sounds like bendix hanging up
but i sped past the basics - what airman said - check battery connections, connections on solenoid etc

i posted a thread on a honda forum on rebuilding my starter - fairly simple affair - here's link
Honda HT 3813 / 4213 starter rebuild - MyTractorForum.com - The Friendliest Tractor Forum & Discussion Board and Best Place for Tractor Information on the web!!!

starters are all, for the most part, identical in design and build- there are some exceptions but suspect your's will be similiar
mine, the "freewheeling" bendix was full of carbon and gummed up

if the above link violates the board rules, my apologies

How old is the battery? Do you get a single click, or a buzz, or whirring sound of the starter?

Check for power at the starter when starting. If none, the solenoid is bad.
