!8.5 Briggs & Stratton fuel pump leak.ing oil

I have a single cyclinder 31Q777 18.5 els briggs that started sucking oil thru the fuel pump which causes it to idle erractly.I have replaced the fuel pump which did not help. my yard is pretty hilly but this problem has just started. I have found that the oil is coming from the vaccum line. I replaced the vaccuum line with a longer line and routed it up around the battery but it still was sucking oil. Help

Check the oil.. Is it over full??? Also check to see if it looks thin &/or smells like gas... Let us know & we'll go from there.... Roger

It does look a little off colored. I will change the oil and see what happens.

is it possible that the crankcase vetalation tube-that ens up in the air intake tube is pushing excess combustion gasses into the intake system ?-indicating a 'worn out cylinder/piston-ring' problem/
try-find the tube mentioned-dissconect it-just place aside-watch it-if it 'puffs' smoke-you are in trouble-ie-the cylinder

If rings are worn excessive crankcase pressure could cause the problem. Being this is an OHV engine a blown head gasket could also be the problem.

A leakdown test is the best way to determine if it is either of these problems. You may consider asking a local shop to perform the leakdown test. I have done them for Do-It-Yourselfers for a nominal fee.

Read about the leakdown test at this link:

I checked the oil.....it did not smell like gas

I checked the oil and it did not smell like gas. It was half way between the add and full line. When I cut the grass the last time it was right on the full line. I will remove the breather tube and see if any smoke and what color comes out.

Checked the breather tube

I unplugged the breather tube from carb and it was puffing a transparent smoke with a little bit of white.
