Gear Box PipePlug On Snow Blower

I have a 20 year old LawnBoy snow blower (model ST826) that I nearly have ready for the season. I can't figure out how to get the pipe plug out of the front of the gear box located on the auger. It's a square male plug. Do I need a special socket? Do I pry it out? Should I be able to pull it out?

I have tried to pull it out and can't do so. The plug seems so flush to the gear box I can't see how I could get something behind it to pry out. I don't want to try yet for fear of damaging the plug.

I have already installed an electric starter, changed the belts, greased, changed oil and spark plug,... Everything seems to be set other than I can't take a look at the fluid level in the gear box. Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks

The plug un-screws. Use:1). open end wrench or 2). adjustable wrench or 3). 8 point socket.
