Oil from PCV valves

Happy New Year to All!!! We had about 3~4 inches of snow, than the temp dropped to -22~-25F.. I had calls from 2 people with oil leaks from their snowblowers . I had just serviced them this fall with 5w-30 oil. They are both Tecumseh ( HMSK100 & HM80) & oil leaking from PCV hose till they warm up. When I got home I cleaned the drive with my own unit (190000 Briggs ) & it left a trail of oil as the others. The valves look clean & seem to work.. Is the 5w-30 too heavy??? Any thoughts?? Thanks too all,, Roger

Roger, I have an HMSK80 and I am using 5W30 Synthetic and have no oil leak problems. Roger I know you better than to over fill the oil. But that is the only thing I can think of that would cause that problem. 5W30 is what is recomended by manufacturers in snowblowers now. Used to use SAE30 and that was not too heavy. OK, yes they did pull over hard in the cold weather.

Sounds like a passage somewhere is frozen shut from condensation, unlike heavier weight oils the 5w30 is thin and getting slung around where the heavier oil wouldn't until it warmed up and by that time the frozen passage would thaw and be open. Have a good one. Geo

Thanks Indy,, I know when they left here they wern't overfull ( I always double check before I deliver them as I'm always worried about forgetting oil for some reason )& even now about the middle of the add/full mark.. I've been using regular dinosaur oil,, If I run into too much trouble again I'll switch to synthetic,, Geo,, you may have something as it was snowing & about 20F than it got really cold as the day went on.. Thanks Lots Guys.. Roger
