Basic Small Engine Maint. Guide

Dear Tom:
Is there a good basic how-to guide on maintaining small gas engines? I want to fix my rough-running lawn boy mower but I need to learn the basics. Thanks. Greg Griffin

Hi:Greg Griffin
Basically it's the same as a car engine if the engine is a four stroke. Some Lawnboy's are two stroke engines and you didn't mention which you have.
The air filter should be checked every two months or sooner and cleaned as per the instructions indicate and more often if the machine is run under dusty conditions.
The oil, if its a four stroke engine, should be checked prior to every use and changed when it gets cloudy or at least twice a year.
The blade should be sharpened each season or more often if it leaves visibly or noticeable stringy grass blades which turn brown, a day or so later after a cutting.
<A sure sign of a dull blade>
Other then these quick tips on maintenance, refer to the owners manual. Other books can be found in mower shops and the library if need be.
Good Luck,
