fuse blows upon crank

I have a Scotts garden tractor (GT2554) manufactured by John Deere with a 25 horse kholer engine. Frequently, when I go to start it the fuse blows immediately. Sometimes the engine will start and will run fine while I use the machine. And recently, if it does start, when I let off the brake/clutch to engage the transmission the fuse will sometimes blow. Any ideas to what might be causing this problem?

sounds like maybe a short to ground in the cranking circuit and likely in the clutch/brake safety switch area since they are part of that circuit and the action there is also blowing fuses.

I'd bet there is a wire or wiring harness that is rubbing against the clutch pedal linkage somewhere or possibly the brake or tensioner arm and/or pulley under the frame and it has rubbed into a wire, creating an intermittent short when you press the pedal.
