Kohler k301S, no spark

I have just been given an older Gravely garden tractor with a Kohler K301s engine, other numbers are 47459d and serial number 5218175. The unit had been outside in the weather for several years but after much cleaning it looks to be in fair condition. I was able to get the engine to turn over and removed the spark plug and grounded the body, no spark. where do I start looking for the problem? How do I test the components? coil etc. thanks

Start by checking/cleaning the points and make sure they are set properly. Also check for voltage at the coil.

With a test light or voltmeter. Connect one end to ground, the other to the + side of the coil.
