Snow blower auger cable problem

I have a Craftsman Model 536.886140 5 HP 22 Inch Dual Stage Snow Thrower. Over the past few uses I have had to pull on the auger cable itself to engage the augers as using the handle wasn't working. Now, the cable won't go back in and there's a huge amount of slack. Upon opening it up, I find that the cable itself and the belts are ok but the cable doesnt appear to be positioned correctly to move the pulley. There is a bracket on the frame adjacent to the pulleys. Is the end of the auger cable supposed to seat in there? Other than that I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Sounds like the pulley return spring is broken. Here is a link to your snowblower. Click on Frame Assembly diagram to see parts breakdown of your problem.
