Briggs 16 hp gas in crankcase

I got a riding mower with a Briggs 16.5 hp engine that has been setting in a shop for a couple of years. A friend put a battery in it and got it started. It mowed fine for about 15 minutes, so I took it to change the oil. When I checked the oil level it was overfilled. I drained the oil and it was extremely thin. Looked like it had gas in the oil, maybe 10-12 ounces. What might cause this?

Briggs model 313777
type 0163-E1
code 010420EZ

Carb float not seating. Remove the carb, take it a part, check the float to mkae sure it does float, soak it in a carb cleaning solution, buy and install a complete carb kit.

That's simple enough. Thanks for the advice. I'll do it and see how it works out. I'll post back when finished. Thank you.
