MTD Yard Machine 18.5HP wont start

Every time I want to start my riding mower I have to take the manifold and air filter off and spray starting fluid in it. Once I get it going in runs just fine. It is just the initial start every weekend that needs it. I was wondering if I should just buy a new carbourator or if there might be something else causing the problem. MTD Yard Machine, probably 1999 model but not sure. 46" blade and 18.5 HP. Thanks a ton guys.

38 racing is right. If this is a B&S engine, they do seem to have a problem with the choke shafts wearing. If it is an "automatic" choke, meaning no seperate choke knob, just push the throttle all the way up and back it down after it starts, these have a problem with the choke shafts wearing to the point of no longer setting the choke.
Please post the model number.

Yes it is a B&S engine. When I spray starting fluid in it I take the filter and everything off so I can see the choke mechanism functioning. There is a manual choke nob and it appears to be closing and opening just fine. I have to spray and work the choke at the same time for about 20 seconds and then it will run fine on its own.

Sounds like you just need to clean the carb out.
