solenoid on murray

I have a Murray rider with a briggs 287707 14.5 hp engine. My problem is that I am not sure if the solenoid is good. It does not make a sound when I turn the key but will start fine if I put a screw driver between the connections on the solenoid. I have charged the battery. could it be the solenoid is bad? thanks for your help.

The problem is most likely the Ignition switch. Also check all wires associated with switch.

while the switch could be bad, I find that the solenoid is the problem more than half the time. Do you have a test light or voltmeter? Check for power at the small wire plugged on to the solenoid when trying to start. If 12 volts is there but the solenoid doesn't click, the solenoid is bad. If power is not at that wire, there is another problem and we'll go from there.
