Question Craftsman Lawn Mower hit a tree root

Hello Folks:

New to the board. I have a:

Craftsman Push Mower
650 Series Briggs
Power-Propelled,
22" Multi-Cut
& Stratton Engine
Electric Start
Model No.
917.376240

and guess what, I hit a small root and the engine immediately shut off. What sucks is the mower is brand new. AND I DIDN'T BUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. However, I feel confident I can fix this problem. Doing it yourself might produce a headache, but in the end when the project is completed, my wallet will be fuller. I've been looking online and found out that most of the time the part that needs immediate replacement is the key.

Well I've taken off the blade and key and everything looks fine. The key has no damage whatsoever.

However, the drive pulley and belt bracket (which are bolted together) have some extreme slack. Notice the slack in the belt.

I notice a spring on the bottom of the bracket, looks like it needs replacement. Anyhow, can someone point me in the direction to fix this mower?

When you tried to start the mower did it kick back?

There was some resistance. But I was able to restart it.

So what exactly is the problem? The loose belt? Is it still loose when you engage the drive?

The key that is being refered to is the flywheel key which is located on top of the engine.

You do know the key has nothing to do with the blade and the parts you photographed, right?

Did you take off the flywheel to inspect the key?

It just seems strange that you took pictures of the blade when that has nothing to do with checking the flywheel key. Are you sure you are barking up the right tree?

I'm not sure how to access the flywheel key. Does it involve me taking the engine off?

No. But you do need to remove the shrouding on top, the recoil starter, then the flywheel.
