B&S 19.5 HP Intek wont stay running

Hopefully someone can help with this. The engine will start with the choke and sounds like its running normally for a second or two, then it cuts off like the key was turned off. Mower has been in storage for a year with stabil in the tank, carb bowl is completely clean and fuel is getting to carb. The battery was dead, so it was being jump started atthe time.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Did you dump the fuel and add fresh?

The classic signs of a dirty carb.

Add fuel and the engine runs, but the carb is plugged up and can't supply fuel by itself.

Fuel was drained and fresh fuel added. The engine starts and runs on its own for 1-2 seconds then shuts off, like the key was turned off, no spitting or sputtering. I'm not adding any additional fuel to make it run, everytime I turn the key it starts and then shuts down.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Check the whole fuel system. Pretty likely to be a dirty carb, but perhaps something else is restricting the fuel supply.

In storage for a year. Fuel is getting to the carb. Your carb is varnished up inside where you can not see. This is why it wont run. Gas gets to the carb, but not THRU the carb. Carb needs to be taken off, taken a part, soaked in a carb cleaning solution (spray carb cleaner will not work) for a couple of hours, rinse off with water, blow out ALL holes with compressed air, install a new carb kit.

Apparently it was the battery, even though it was hooked up to the car and would start, and run for 1-2 seconds, I guess the battery was so discharged it would not stay running. Put a new battery in to continue trouble shooting, turned the key and it fired up and ran perfectly. Problem solved. Not sure why it wouldnt stay running while connected to the car battery, but its something to remember for the next time.
Thank you for your help.
