Starter on a 14 hp Briggs and Stratton engine

Starter on a 14 hp Briggs and Stratton engine

The starter tries to turn the engine, but can not. I put in a new battery, also jumped it and I hooked it directly to the hot fitting on the starter. I took the starter apart to check the brushes. They probably could be replaced. My problem is when I tried to turn or pull the armature out of the fields in the case I could hardly pull it out. The fields had a tremendous amount of magnetic pull. I have never run into this problem before, Is this normal. Thanks fencepost.

You didn't tell us the model, type or code of the engine, but I'm wondering about your trouble being caused by valve adjustment if this one has the OHV... If you post the engine numbers the pro's can give you the specs.. It's always a good idea to check them every year or so anyway... Roger
