TVM 220 8 hp tecumseh

How do you set the governor on this engine, it surges and doesn't get up to full throttle

Governors usually are not the problem. Surging is due to a dirty carb.

cleaned the carb and all looks good. I did take the spring off the gov. and may have stretched it. Could this cause the hard starting and surging

Did you clean all 3 holes in the main jet? There are 2 tiny holes that everyone misses. 1 is in the threads. Surging is caused by not getting enough fuel to the engine.

I'll try that now. Can I just take the bolt from the bottom of the carb, without taking the carb. off?

took the carb off and cleaned the 3 holes, they were clean. Could the gasket be bad, it had a tear in it. May I had a leak in the gasket

Started up but still surging. Has only one speed. When I move the throttle , nothing happens. What do you think it is, it is driving me to drink

If you stretched the spring far enough to deform it then that may be an issue.

how do I know what spring to get? When I start it with choke on, it starts to sputter, then when I move the throttle to high speed it just keeps on searching, then when I move it to slow, there is no change in engine speed. There is a small plastic cap, is that an adjustment screw on the carb? Even if I hold the govenor steady, it starts to back fire. and if I push the gov. it speeds up. something isn't doing its job, but what

If you can post the numbers off the engine and perhaps the equipment it is on, some one most likely can find a part number for you. You could also take those numbers to a local shop along with the spring and compare or replace.

It does sound like this could be the problem. The throttle actually changes the tension on the governor spring to control engine speed. It could also that the spring is not connected correctly.

Got it running and found out why it wouldn't go slow and fast, the throttle cable wasn't adjusted right. It now goes slow and fast, but with hesitation and does not run smoothly. under load with the blade on, it runs fine, but with the blade off, it runs rough. Any ideas?

Tecumseh on a Snapper What has the world come too

I don't recognize those engine numbers...but it sounds as though your high speed may be a bit too high, or carb a bit lean. I would try adjusting the cable back a bit so that full speed is a bit less.
FYI there is no need for full throttle with no load, IE: no motion drive and no mowing.

Would you mind posting the model numbers for the Snapper rider?
