Honda Harmony II HRT2162TDA issues, engine quit while mowing, self propel system

Honda Harmony II HRT2162TDA quit while mowing and will not restart. Had become difficult to start when cold or hot but now will not start at all. Recoil cord seems harder to pull after it quit (broke recoilcord handle). No sign of exhaust thru muffler, but now backfires. Oil/gasOK. I will reserve my thoughts and see what others may think.

Also, on the self propel system (hydrostatic transmission), never really worked well (if at all now), played with the cables in the past with no change. Been pushing for the past few years. wha tis the history/re/iability of this system?

And if considering a new replacement, any thoughts on the Honda HRX21K2HMA? Is the drive system any better?

For the hard starting and since you broke the rope, the flywheel key is sheared. If you hit a rock or stump while mowing, that would cause the key to break.Key Part # 13331-357-000.
As far as the transmission, it could be 1 of the 2 springs have broken. 13331-357-000 SPRING, WHEEL TENSION or 23439-VE0-851 SPRING, CLUTCH ARM RETURN or could just be the belt is slipping or a new belt needed. 22431-VE1-T00 V-BELT.

No hit while mowing at the time it quit.

Tried a new belt. Did not see any broken springs while intalling the belt or attempting cable adjustment. Thought it would be the drive unit itself.

If it is the flywheel key it has been failing over time.
