Confused!!

I have a 2006 B&S 16.5 hp engine that will not start. It turns over and over and over and over. You can hear it trying to start. It backfires, and blows a puff of smoke, that's it. It is getting fuel in the combustion chamber, and the plug is firing. I know this because I took the plug out to see if it was firing, and when I hit the key to check the firing, fuel shot out of the plug hole, hit the plug and ignited all over the front side of me, my arms, neck, face, and chest. Needless to say, when I put the plug back in, it still just isn't starting up. Where should I go next?? Is it getting too much fuel and flooding out?? Or is it not getting enought fuel?? Please help before I roll this mower down the hill and let it rust away.

Soulds like it may be getting too much gas. Carb needs to come off, be cleaned, new needle & seat installed. Also check the float to makes sure it floats.

You may not need a new needle and seat. Try cleaning out the carb, the float and needle may be sticking. Carb cleaner will hopefully make all right again.

You will need the numbers off the engine and what brand of carb you have. Usually Nikki or Wlabro. Name is stamoed on the side of the carb.
