Briggs Valve seat popped out of block

What would cause a valve seat on a Briggs to pop out of the block. It popped up about 1/16 inch. I made sure both valves were closed and then took a flat punch and with a hammer tapped it back in. Motor then started on first pull.

Heat causes it. Put it back in place, then use a center punch and go around the seat just outside the edge and punch the aluminum block many times around the seat to peen the aluminum over and hold the seat in place. Google "peen valve seat" and I'm sure you'll get lots of hits and pics of what this should look like.

I know, but chances are it will come back out now since it has once already...and if so, you'll know how to fix it next time.

I would suppose that the smart move is to open it up again and do the peening so the job is done right.

One cross to bear with DIY work is often the need to do a job over two or three times until you get it done right.
