Tiller cord "snaps back"

I'm not really sure the best word for it, but when I go to start my tiller the pull cord snaps back really hard when it starts. This has just started happening. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas. It's to the point where it pulls the handle right out of my hand.

Flywheel key is sheared which throws off the timing. Flywheel keys cost about $1.

Great and that will stop it from yanking the pull cord out of my hand... I'll give that a try.
