Old trimmer line

I have a Ryobi line trimmer. Had a problem with the line breaking off inside the spool. I had bought a bulk pack of line and have had it for quite a few years. I was cutting some tall weeds and I expect the line to break, just not inside the spool. The line has not been exposed to the sun as it has been stored inside. Does line get old and brittle or do I have a problem with my spool?
