Hard starting snapper

I have a Snapper lawnmower with a 6 hp engine. It is probably 20 years old. It has always started good up until this year after winter. It seems now when I start it with the electric start the engine needs to turn over for about a good 15-20 seconds before it fires and starts. During the 15-20 seconds it sounds like it is not even going to start then all of a sudden BAM it starts up and runs fine. I checked the plug and it looks good. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hard to say without knowing what engine, but it could be low compression. If it starts ok when warm prolly rings, if not could be valve clearance....
Could be choke needing a cable adjustment too if equipped or....

Push mower? Riding mower? There are electric start 6hp engines on both. What engine is on it?
