917.372282 recoil

I have a Craftsman Rotary lawn mower. Model #917.372282 Engine model # 143.414382 craftsman. It is a Tecumseh 4.0 hp engine.
I have completly tuned it up , It has a serious recoil problem. I can pull the cord about 1/2 way and it jerks right out of my hand. It rarly starts with the 1/2 pull. Sometimes I can pull it all the way but, most of the time not. It is very difficult to start. Any Ideas?
Thanks

It's either a valve adjustment or the flywheel key has sheared throwing the timing off.

I would say flywheel key. Happens when you hit a rock or stump when mowing.

Not hard. Just take off the shroud from the flywheel, take off the nut/washer, then put a little pressure up from the bottom of the flywheel with wood wedges or use a puller if you have one. Tap on the outside of the flywheel. They usually pop off. Just don't force anything too much.

Then clean off the end of the crank, stick the key back in, put on the flywheel and tighten the nut like you don't want it to come off.

Before you go to that extent, make sure the blade is on it. If not, it will cause your problem.
