Hydro help
I know we have more than a few tranny guys on here and I have very little experience with them.
I have two customers recently with similar if not the same models and would like to find some info on the hydro/transaxles.
Both are AYP craftsman, 917.273223 uses the same drive unit as both. I have replaced belts and idler pulleys on both and fan on one.
I can not find any ID on the tranny's themselves, but they have a filter and the only drawings I can find only show a hex nut near the bottom and a fitting (maybe a vent as well) on the top near the filter and the pump.
Looking for service info, no problems yet just want to do preventative if needed.
TIA

Well, the sears site is down for maintenance again... I keep hitting them at the wrong hours. Do these have a spin on filter, or internal filter? Most of the LT models have units that don't require service at all.

Its a GT with a spin on external. Thats the main reason I am looking for what to do with it.
The drive belt goes from Horizontal on the engine pulley to Vertical on the tranny.

I managed to find an owners manual:
Says transaxle is sealed at factory and fluid maintenance is not required for the life of the transaxle. Should it ever leak or require servicing, contact your nearest authorized service dealer.
Just strange they would hang that big honkin filter out in front of everything like it is and not expect someone to want to change it

Don't give up on me cheese, I would still like to know what the authorized dealer could or would do.
Also have another older craftsman hydro issue. I will get the model later but its older than the lt/gt. 46" with 15.5 Kohler.
Not sure what drive belt is on it and it looks good, but the mower starts out with decent drive but only lasts for 20 mins or so then just wants to not go. Bit of growl but not much and no jerkyness, just no go under torque like turns or hill.
Fan is toast and I also have a new belt, its just been on the back burner. Just wondering if the fluid might be fried too and while I am doing the fan and belt I should do more. After running/mowing for that long the diff is quite warm to the touch, even hot to the hand....?
I do know the previous owner had a blade for the front and used it to push gravel, blew the kohler up. I repowered it with 18 HP briggs twin Lhead.
Thanks
Oh, Hope the wife and helper are doing well!
Peace
Scott

When I was contracted for sears warranty repair, we did nothing to the hydros. If they went bad, we changed them. I have changed fluid in a few since then, but feel it wasn't necessary.
The one you are having trouble with is probably because of the fan being bad. They depend on the fan and the cooling fins for cooling of the fluid. The hotter it gets, the more it tries to cavitate and lose power. Try replacing the fan and clean the cooling fins out on top of the tranny.

I was hopin that would do it and do have the parts, although True blue belt
It's my own so when it don't work right, will be all on me so.
Thanks for the info, I'll figure belts and cooling for problems then.
