how to replace drive belt on MTD lawn tractor????

The drive belt on my MTD lawn tractor model 771 broke and needs to be replaced. Can anyone explain how to replace the belt? Also when the belt broke the small spring came off so can you also explain how and where this spring is attached?

Is removing the battery the best way to access this belt and replace it?

Under the seat you should find a label with model and serial number....
Plug them in here:
PDF Manual Web Archive

If you still need help post the model and serial #

Which belt broke?
Yes you will need to remove the battery to access either or both belts.

It is the smaller drive belt. and the smaller spring that attaches to the smallest pully. It is the belt tha makes the tractor move in forward and reverse.

You're right, the drive belt isn't covered in the manual.
Can you make out any kind of tensioner for that belt?
Perhaps the shifter being in neutral acts as the tensioner?
