Testing Transmisson on Riding Mower

I have a Kgro (When K-Mart sold these),Riding mower, 18HP, Briggs and Straton engine,(model 422707, type 152901, Code 9411095A)

When I put it in gear to go forward or backward, it will go short distance and then stop moving on it's own. If I turn off gas engine and then shift to Neutral position and push on back of mower, it will move forward and then rear wheels lock up. Then, if I pull back on mower it will unlock rear wheels and I can then push it forward and it moves short distance and then repeats locking up rear wheels.
NE 1 have ideas????

check the brake assy...if the brake pucks are worn or the control is siezed,,they may cause this.. If it stops the brake is hanging up,, I would inspect the drive belts while in there just for a goof... Roger
